Social Development
The Social Development Group is always looking for new members. We generally meet once a month to discuss the yayasan (institute) projects. Visits to yayasans vary in frequency from two to four times yearly and include interesting opportunities to attend meetings of the BKKKS (Co-ordinating Body on Social Welfare Activities) and Interswat (TB Partnership Forum), participate in fund raising activities and attend various other functions related to the group’s yayasan projects. If you are interested in attending a meeting, please contact us for more information.
Overview
Indonesia is a country stricken with great poverty and hardship. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming to decide where to give your donation to ensure that it is going to people who really need it. It is very easy to form a charitable organization in Indonesia, so there are many.
One of the greatest problems is that of poor management. There can be the best of intentions but if a project is not well run and organized, it will achieve few of the aspirations it had hoped for. The Social Development Group therefore does screening and sets guidelines which can be used to separate an effective charity from one which is not. Regular visits, by CWA and other women’s groups, often keep charities on track and ensure that funding is being put to the best use possible.
So if you’re looking for an effective way to help the under-privileged people of Indonesia you may want to consider a donation to the CWA.
Background
The Social Development Group has been in existence since the early days of the CWA in Jakarta. Beginning first as a Scholarship Program and later taking on charities, one by one, the CWA has now grown into a major contributor supporting a wide variety of worthwhile causes such as scholarships, lunch programs, medical clinics, the elderly in need and the disadvantaged.
Funding
There are basically two parts to the program of the Social Development Group.
Firstly, there is the Scholarship Program which assists disadvantaged children with educational fees and school related costs. Funds for the Scholarship Program come primarily from the CWA members as well as their friends and family. Frequently, individuals will sponsor one or more children and continue this faithfully until the children graduate and are ready to start careers.
Secondly, there is the yayasan Charity Programs which usually receive funding from several different sources. Typically one third to one half of the funds come from the CWA. Annual events such as Bazaars, Balls, and even Raffles generate proceeds which are then provided to support CWA projects. We’re hoping that CWA Web site enhancements will lead to greater opportunities to generate funding. Private donors and corporate sponsors, through their generous support, provide the other one half to two thirds of the budget needed by yayasan social development projects. We are very grateful that Canadian and local businesses complement CWA generated funding for the yayasan social development projects in Indonesia.
